A Wading River, NY teenager pled guilty to cruelty to animals today
for clubbing to death a nesting piping plover on August 3, 1997 at
the
Shinnecock West County Beach in Hampton Bays.
The teen's name cannot be released because he has been granted
youthful offender status by the court.
The now 17-year-old male was sentenced in Southampton Town Justice
Court today to 140 hours of community service that will include work
with the Suffolk County Department of Parks and Recreation Piping
Plover Program. The County agency marks nesting sites and seeks to
protect plovers from beach goers and intruders who might otherwise
stumble into the birds' areas.
