- bushy annual with flaky pale brown bark
- internodes very short
- leaves stalkless, about 1/2-3/4 inches long, ovate or triangular, pointed at tip and truncate as base
- powdery-hairy surface of leaves gives them a greenish-yellow color
- flowers inconspicuous, unisexual, males and females on same plant

- fruiting bracts ovate, not truncate at base, 1/4 inch wide or less
- saline areas along the coast in Kleberg County and inland saline sites in La Salle, Starr and Webb counties
