Caesalpinia phyllanthoides
  • small shrub usually 2 feet tall or shorter
  • leaves bipinnately compound, with 5-9 pinnae
  • pinnae with 2-3 pairs of leaflets, with no terminal leaflet
  • ultimate leaf segments <1/4 inch long, almost round, with strong veins on lower surface
  • flowers in short racemes, with 5 yellow petals
  • pod 1 -11/4 inches long, 1/2 inch wide, with 2 seeds
  • grows in brush on caliche or calcareous sandstone west of Lake Corpus Christi in Jim Wells and Live Oak counties
  • also known from Tamaulipas
