  • herbaceous perennial or weak shrub with erect or ascending stems
  • often hidden among stouter stems of larger shrubs
  • leaves unique, with 3 lobes each of which usually has secondary lobes
  • flowers seldom seen, with 5 white lobes
  • fruit a 3-lobed capsule
  • known from Duval, Hidalgo and Starr counties; ranges south into Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon
  • grows mostly in shrublands on caliche or calcareous sandstone
  • habitat in Mexico may be different—studies currently underway
