- aquatic plant with submersed stems forming large clumps
- leaves irregularly and asymmetrically toothed or lobed
- broad leaf segments- not linear as in water milfoil (Myriophyllum)
- flowers in white heads on long peduncles, usually held above surface of water
- occurs in springs and spring runs such as San Felipe Springs in Del Rio
- two locations in Texas and a few more in northern Coahuila and northern Nuevo Leon
