- showy annual with stems up to 2 feet tall
- leaves crowded at base of stem, finely dissected into linear segments
- flower heads on long peduncles
- ray flowers purple-brown with yellow-orange tips
- disk flowers purple-brown
- endemic to South Texas
- mostly in deep sands in northern half of South Texas Plains
- known (at least historically) from 9 counties, but rare in the wild
- more common in nursery trade—sold as Cosmidium burridgeanum
