Rio Grande tumble-mustard (Thelypodiopsis shinnersii)

  • annual with hairless stems 1-21/2 feet tall
  • leaves simple, clasping the stem, obovate in outline, 2-3 inches long with a grayish waxy bloom
  • flowers in racemes, with four white petals and four purplish sepals
  • fruit pods very slender
  • known in Texas only from Rio Grande delta
  • several collections from brush stands along Arroyo Colorado in Harlingen
  • not seen in Texas in several decades
  • occurs at higher elevations in Tamaulipas
