- slender annual with weak stems up to 10 inches long
- leaves opposite on lower part of the stem, sometimes alternate on upper part, stalkless, smooth
- flowers in white heads at the tips of branches
- occurs in seasonally wet soils in wetlands
- blooms following rains
- South Texas and northern Mexico to California, but rare throughout range
